Why is the Inductive Bible Study method the most effective if you want to grow in God’s word? It comes down to the three components of the Inductive Bible Study method: Observation, Interpretation, and Application.
So let’s dive in and break each one down.
Observation is the first component and without it, the other two are useless. Observation involves reading, taking notes, and cross-referencing different passages of the Bible in order to come to a firm understanding of what the Scripture is saying. True observation is not just reading with your eyes, but reading with your mind and reflecting on that which you read. How many times have you read a passage and forgotten completely what it was that you read by the time you’ve finished? It is because you read only with your eyes, and not with your mind.
The more you read the Bible mindfully, the more you will find its truths become apparent to you.
Interpretation is an in-depth examination of your observations, to derive accurate meaning of the passage. Rather than relying purely on what others have said, or even what you think, if you’ve carefully observed what the Scripture says, you will be able to find its true meaning. Interpretation is not separate from Observation, but the one flows from the other. As you read mindfully, you will begin to see the true meaning as you go along. As with all things, perfect practice makes perfect, and Bible study is no exception, the more you do it, the better you will become at it. Keep in mind that the Holy Spirit is always available to help you accurately understand the Word, but you must diligently observe the text first in order to begin to assimilate what He is telling you through the Scripture.
The third component of the Inductive Bible Study method is Application. It is not exactly a step, but it happens as the truth becomes apparent to you, you decide to respond in obedience to God’s Word. When you know God’s word, you will know how to apply it to every circumstance and situation in your life. When you have accurately interpreted and understood God’s Word, you will no longer question what it is that you should do; you will be equipped to do the right thing in His eyes.
Remember, these are not steps to be taken, but components of a process that will lead you to the truth. Often, observation, interpretation and application will seem to happen simultaneously, and you will see the truth at that moment, as God can inspire you at any time. Other times you may have to reread a passage many times before you fully understand. Diligent practice and study of God’s word will give you the strength to tread the hardest paths in life. ‘I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.’ Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
